Non-Essential Personnel
Bill Wyatt, AKA William Wharton Wyatt, is an idealistic late 20’s Wall Street blueblood from an old money family. Raised in a spacious townhouse off 5th Avenue, he attended the finest prep schools and earned an MBA at Harvard. For the past two years Bill has worked in the family investment business. No one in Bill’s blue chip stock circle ever dreamed carefree, impetuous Bill would inherit some recessive idealism gene. But in the wake of the last Isis attack and the embarrassment of Trump, Bill shocks everyone by quitting his job to do his part and serve his country. His all-business father told him he wouldn’t last a day. Unfortunately, with his wool allergies, he’s stamped 4-F, and the Army won’t take him. But determined to serve, he accepts the only job available: teaching Business to soldiers, spouses and Army Brats at the Fort Dowd SOC school, (Servicemen’s Opportunity Campus). For Bill, it’s as close to the action as he can get.
McConnell, Kentucky would be just another wide spot in the highway if it weren’t for neighboring Fort Dowd. Since World War II, Fort Dowd has brought an air of “worldliness” to this cowpath town-- that is if you want to call Mei Ling’s Shimmy Shack, the Dutch Mill Motel, and Al’s Zither Bar “cosmopolitan”. The locals just want to get out and after six weeks even the lily-livered recruits are pumped for Kuwait, Kosovo, or Kurdistan-any K word as long as it’s not Kaintuck. Yep, Fort Dowd and McConnell are nobody’s first choice. Yep. If war is hell, this place is purgatory.
